The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA.org) defines Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) as a form of psychotherapy that uses bodily movement to promote holistic development and the integration of mind–body–self, with the aim of improving mental health and overall well-being.
In Dance/Movement Therapy, you do not need long legs or flexible, aesthetically pleasing dance techniques. Movement and dance are used as tools for communication and exploration—to express emotional landscapes and deeper layers of awareness, and to connect inwardly with oneself, relationally with the therapist, and outwardly with the surrounding world. Through this process, clients are empowered to cultivate self-awareness, facilitate healing, initiate change, and support holistic growth.

The concepts of art and therapy are fundamentally different in both purpose and driving motivation.
The ultimate goal of therapy is to heal physical and psychological wounds. In contrast, the purpose of art in general is to create a sense of fulfillment through bodily movement, sound, color, language, or other artistic media.Therapy has a practical and clinical aim: to support individuals in overcoming psychological difficulties that they are unable to face on their own. Unlike therapy, the core purpose of art is to bring joy through the act of creation. This is the essence of the aesthetic experience. It is therefore important to recognize the distinction between aesthetic purposeand practical purpose. Therapy serves a practical, therapeutic function, whereas art is fundamentally oriented toward experiences of beauty and aesthetics, and only indirectly may it offer additional positive effects such as expression, relaxation, or healing.
According to Barbara Mettler, “Creative Dance - Art or Therapy?”, published in the journal of the American Dance Therapy Association, 1990.
